Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard physical horror, but within Together resides a profound meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple relocate from the big city to the rural area for her career. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
